At Manchester High School, there are a variety of different clubs if you’re looking to further your education and gather extracurricular commitments to improve your overall High School experience. National Honors Society is a club with specific requirements honoring your academic excellence throughout your high school years. At Manchester, Mr. Tressler sponsors the club, and senior Johnathan Torres runs the club, typically meeting once a month, usually in the auditorium.
National Honors Society dates back to March 1st, 1921. Dr. Rynearson pioneered his dream and turned it into a reality. He wanted to create an organization that wouldn’t only empower young scholars but also encourage service, leadership, and character into young students.
“In 1921, amidst an educational landscape caught between the balancing act of athletics and academics, Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, PA, had a profound vision. He saw the future of an organization that would not only ignite the flames of scholarship but also fan the sparks of service, leadership, and character in the young minds of our nation,” National Honors Society explained.
At Manchester, National Honors Society serves as a prestigious club you’re invited to for academic excellence. I interviewed member Lakeyce Farris to understand a bit more about the club, and what you can expect from it as a member.
“It’s a prestigious club that’s a staple at each high school, so joining means a lot to me and my academics,” Farris described.
Getting a club like National Honors Society on your college resume looks awesome! I wanted to know one of the best things about the NHS, Farris responding with the following.
“Volunteering because I get to help people out with my friends so it’s really a win-win situation,” Farris explained.
Helping friends out, boosting your college application, and being rewarded for academic excellence all sounds amazing! National Honors Society seems to be an awesome club for students who are driven and want more opportunities to grow their skills and leadership abilities.
“Creating opportunities for your students and investing in their leadership development requires commitment, time, and resources, but you aren’t alone,” National Honors Society states.
