MCF or Manchester Christian Fellowship is a program here at MHS that meets every Friday for Bible study and to worship God. This club meets at 7:30a.m. before school opens. MCF has bridged a way for students to feel more connected to God and the classmates around them. This club is pretty popular among the Manchester students. Considering that 62% to 69% of U.S. adults identify as Christian, this is not a surprising fact.
When writing this article I interviewed Easton Walker and asked her many questions about what this club means to her and why she chooses to participate in it. “I love to read the bible and get in touch with the word of God, and being able to share this love with people from my school is amazing!,” Walker said. She also told me that she goes to both Cloverhill Church and occasionally Hope Point Church outside of school. In the Christian community at MHS, many people are thankful for this club and that we could start MCF without any “fuss”.
Westside Community Board of Education v. Mergens was a court case held in the US in 1990 in which students were denied the option to start a Christian Bible study club at their school. Bridget Mergens was the name of the girl who took the initiative to start the club. When the school denied her the option to start the club, she took them to court. The final ruling on the case was that denying access to the club went against the equal access act and that the school must allow the club because they had other clubs that were not strictly educational to the school curriculum.
It is people like Mergens speaking up who give us the opportunity to have clubs like MCF today. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
