Some of the Mass Comm students here at Manchester have recently joined a program that focuses on teaching younger students (elementary and middle schoolers) about Mass Comm. If you don’t know what Mass Comm is, it is a program where you can learn about all forms of mass communications. This means the students are learning Production, Journalism, Broadcasting, etc. So when we went to the elementary schools to teach the students mass communications, they were all intrigued by the new subject because they found that things we use or see in everyday life are related to a whole field of studies.
While interviewing Ms.O’Brien, I learned that she is encouraged to run this program because it raises visibility to groups who’ve never heard of it and includes many specialty centers throughout the county. She has decided to participate in La Feria because real world applications are good for the public speaking aspect in the mass comm program. “My favorite part of being a mass comm teacher is the relationships I build with my students while watching them grow up,” O’Brien said in the interview. I also interviewed a student, Isla Robinson Alley. She joined this program because she was inspired to introduce the Mass Communications program to everyone of all ages, but also to connect and find new hobbies/possibilities for their future in middle school. She is presenting logos at La Feria on Feb. 21. “When I was first introduced to the Mass Comm program at Manchester, I really wanted to get involved in more activities that were outside my comfort zone yet still something I’m interested in. I could really see myself writing articles and being in front of a camera for a career.”
Mass communication is really important to learn about because we need people to be journalists, news anchors, and production managers to get all of the news information that we need to be a well functioning society. Mass communications is a good career to go into. With over 66,000 degrees from colleges worldwide, you could only assume that it must be a popular field to go into. When you consider how we use mass communications in everyday life, it really makes you think about how important it is to society as a whole. Next time you see Ms.O’Brien tell her thank you for all she does not only for MHS but for other schools throughout the county.
