Manchester offers a variety of different clubs all covering various activities. Anime Club is a leisurely club that’s hosted every Monday in G249, Mr. Graham’s room. It usually lasts about an hour and you can expect to see a new episode or movie each time.
Anime is derived from the English word, Animation, and it’s a popular style of Japanese film and television animation. Its origin goes back to 1917, Shingacho: Meian no Shippai, an anime drawn before WWII simply using chalk to animate it.
“The First ever anime or animation ever confirmed to come out was in the early 1917’s names Shingachō: Meian no Shippai even before WWII using just chalk to animate. The first three people to shape the anime industry today are named Ōten Shimokawa, Junichi Kōuchi, and Seitaro Kitayama,” Wildcatchrolnicle informed.
At Manchester, Anime Club attempts to put a historical and informational spin on the fun animation style. Here’s a few things Mr. Graham says you get to do in Anime club.
“I typically have Japanese music playing when members come in, and then I’ll do a survey to see what shows or movies they’re wanting to watch. I have Japanese snacks ready and occasionally talk about events going on in relation to Anime. Maybe a new movie coming out, social events, scandals, or conventions,” Graham described.
Seems like Anime Club can immerse you in Japanese culture and inform you on a wide variety of topics. But, why would Mr. Graham recommend joining?
“It’s a fun inclusive experience for students. Gives students a variety of social, cultural, and ways to tell a story in a school regulated environment. You also get snacks,” Graham explains.
Aside from the amenities in Anime Club, what skills can it benefit students? Here’s Mr. Graham’s opinion.
“Anime Club can provide media literacy, understanding the cultural context, how it relates to old history, and let students make references in Anime. Cultural perspectives, encouraging new language learning, and your ability to engage with the media,” Graham states.
If you’re looking for an inclusive space and are into film or manga, Anime Club seems like an awesome place for you!
