Manchester High School recently hosted their annual Homecoming dance at school on Oct. 4, 2025. The SCA, specifically the set-up crew, was responsible for deciding and preparing the event. Through dedication and hardwork, the masquerade was set.
Homecoming has been a tradition since the early 20th century, tracing back to 1911 at the University of Missouri. The event has evolved over the years to represent changes in society and the desires of school communities. It has become more formal, hosting a school pep rally, a parade with floats before the football game and dances to celebrate school spirit.
“The origins of homecoming can be traced back to the early 20th century. It is believed that the first homecoming event was held at the University of Missouri in 1911. The school had recently moved to the newly-built Memorial Stadium, and alumni were invited back to campus to see the new facility and attend a football game. The event was a huge success, and it quickly became an annual tradition,” Matsnation informs.
As schools across the nation celebrate, they all have their own Homecoming traditions and preparation. Our SCA Secretary, Morgan Gibson, gave me a rundown of the ways our school composes the reputable event.
“We had many hands on deck, from our officers to our representatives and our sponsor, Ms. Kim. I can speak for our officers when I say that we really were helped by all the positive input on decor. Our officers led a lot of set-up along with many of our reps,” Gibson explained.
Thanks to all the SCA officers and representatives, Manchester was able to create the annual celebration, but how was the theme and decoration brought to life?
“The officers met before school started and began brainstorming. Once the year started, we had weekly decoration committee meetings on Thursdays. Most of our supplies were from thrifting or Amazon,” Gibson described.
Amazon and thrifting saved the day! After the decoration was set, it was time for everybody to enjoy themselves. However, how did the clean-up and subsequent hours unfold?
“My favorite part of the dance was the feedback we received after. There were a lot of positive things said. Of course, there was negative, but there’s going to be someone that’s upset no matter what you do,” Gibson reported.
Thanks to our SCA team and sponsor, Ms. Kim, the Manchester High School community could enjoy the festivities and fun night of school spirit.
“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom,” Marcel Proust proclaimed.
