Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made the controversial decision by benching future star Justin Fields for veteran Russell Wilson for Sunday night football against the Jets. Tomlin came to this decision because he wanted to see more from his offense, who’s ranked 26th in yards. “Justin has been really good and we’ve been really good at times, but not to be confused with great. This is a competitive league, man. We’re trying to position ourselves to be that team and we got a player with talent who hasn’t had an opportunity to play,” Tomlin said when he made the decision. Fans were very confused and mad when they heard this news. Fields was a Pittsburgh fan favorite and led the Steelers to a 4-2 start. When the game started, it didn’t take long for Pittsburgh fans to be fed up with Wilson. The Steelers scored a field goal on the first drive of the game, but then went three-and-out on the next three drives, where the Steelers only gained a total of nine yards. Through those four drives, Wilson was 2-of-8 for 19 yards, with no touchdowns. After the end of the fourth drive and the third three-and-out, boos started to roar throughout Metlife stadium. Wilson and the Steelers then went on to score on 6 of the final 7 drives of the game. Wilson ended the game going 16-for-29 with 264 yards and 3 total touchdowns (2 passing and 1 rushing). Wilson throwing for 264 yards set a Steelers record of most passing yards in a debut since 1957. The previous record holder Earl Morrall had 249 yards. Wilson also had a great connection with superstar wide receiver George Pickens. Pickens was targeted 9 times, caught the ball 5 times for 111 yards and 1 touchdown. After the game, Tomlin was asked about how he felt about Wilson’s start. He went on to say “I thought Wilson was excellent. I thought he got better as the game went on. But I’m not surprised by that. It’s been a while since he’s played some ball”. Fans went from booing Russ to cheering for him at the end of the game. Wilson’s start made the coaches and the fans all proud. Wilson has put a new spark in the Steelers lackluster offense and it looks like this offense will now be dangerous.
