Since Thanksgiving has just passed, it was a great time to reflect on everyone that has made a significant impact on our lives. Mr Cottrell is one person that I am thankful for as my teacher. He brings in unique blends of fun and dedication to the classroom. What sets him apart is his strength to create an engaging learning environment while making sure that his students are learning the material that is needed.
His approach to being a teacher started from an early experience coaching a swim team when he was 16, where he discovered his love for working with kids. This passion really shows now into his teaching style. His teaching style makes him not only an educator but a mentor who genuinely cares about his students’ growth.
One of Mr Cottrell’s best qualities is his emphasis on enjoying the learning process. He says we should “learn to laugh at your mistakes.” This approach is refreshing to most serious and stressful situations throughout high school. He learned early in his career, during his first year of teaching, that his teaching style, as he described, is a “controlled chaos.” He really embraces a more relaxed and engaging style of teaching, which is honestly encouraging for me. His goals are simple: have fun while ensuring we learn.
Mr Cottrell’s impact extends beyond the classroom, regarding an experience with a student named Skylar Harley. When Skylar finally grasped a poetry concept, she had a look of understanding on her face which made Mr Cottrell feel a sense of accomplishment. This moment has shaped his way of students wanting to succeed and move forward.
Mr Cottrell’s favorite book, that he read his sophomore year of college, is, “The Way of Kings.” This reflects his imaginative spirit, and even his love for mozzarella sticks which make for a perfect midnight snack. Like most of the students in school, he looks forward to the end of the school year, particularly for poetry and presentations. This all reveals his down to earth attitude, and it is clear that Mr Cottrell is not just a teacher, but a guide who inspires to learn, grow, and find joy in the process.
