The Lancer Theatre Company announced their fall play called The Tempest by William Shakespeare. The play will be performed outside in the senior courtyard October 22, 23, 24 and 26. This is also the first outside play that Manchester has done in school history.
Sophomore Engel Jefferson, who plays Miranda, says “The atmosphere is very welcoming and positive. It’s also nice to do things with people who have similar interests. People should come see the Tempest because a lot of work has gone into making it.”
I wanted to help out because I love theater and I think that it’s cool being a part of the play even if you’re not in the cast,” says Charlotte Fazar.
Work on the set began in early September in Mr. Nothnagel’s theater production classes working on various parts of the set. Doing the play outside has its challenges because of combating weather and nature.
“I picked the Tempest because it has been a long time since Manchester has done a Shakespeare play, eight years actually. The last one we did was Romeo and Juliet when I was in high school. I wanted to do another Shakespeare and introduce something new to the students that they have not had any experience with. Shakespeare is difficult, but can be a fantastic experience once you get a good grasp on it,” says Mr. Carley.
Some scenes of the play take place in a cave, beach, forest, moss and cliff. The play opens with a shipwreck and some cast members will be pulling strings, and there is a moving steering wheel.
“Because of where we are doing the play, there is not a lot of room to have backstage. Every scene is on one set,” says Mr. Nothnagel. The play will take place in the Courtyard, an outside area in the center of the school.
