Opinion: Christmas comes too early
December 10, 2020
Christmas is the 25th of December, but stores are beginning to shove jolly and holly spirits down our throats as early as September. Now, the very day after Halloween stores are setting up all sorts of Christmas themed decorations and goods. It’s as if Thanksgiving has been overlooked. This phenomenon, called Christmas Creep, is a problem I’d like to see go away next year.
I enjoy Christmas just as much as any other holiday, but I’d like to celebrate them in a timely manner. For Halloween, I want things to have a spooky atmosphere, Thanksgiving is a wholesome time for gathering to be appreciative, and then Christmas is a feel good time where gifts are exchanged.
Stores may be to blame for this. In an article from last year a woman went to pick up some candy on Halloween and was met with a display of Christmas elves right beside a Halloween balloon. Both to me and this woman it seems a bit odd.
This year things seem a bit different though. With a certain illness going around, I would be willing to let it pass this one time. In this article about Christmas decorating, two people interviewed had already begun decorating as soon as early November and mentioned Covid as a driving reason. Normally, most people wait until Thanksgiving passes to start decorating, but now an early introduction of the holiday spirit will hopefully brighten life up a bit for them.
Normally, I would prefer for the Christmas season to at least wait until after November 25th, but 2020 has me wanting next year to arrive soon. While I believe Christmas Creep is a problem, this year it gets a pass.
