MHS Math Department welcomes Ms. Babinsky
December 7, 2020
Ms. Babinsky, who began teaching math at Manchester this year, always knew that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others, but she didn’t expect that difference to be made as a teacher.
“When thinking about what I wanted to do, I knew two things: that I wanted to do something that involved working with people and something that made a positive impact on society. I originally went to college as a nursing major, but quickly changed to math during my first semester of freshman year,” she says.
This unplanned move set the course for her career, allowing her to play to her strengths and be like some of her better teachers.
“It’s funny looking back, because it was such a spur of the moment decision – I didn’t enjoy what I was learning in nursing classes, and therefore wasn’t doing well. I knew that I was strong in math and enjoyed it, and becoming a teacher definitely fit my two conditions for my career. Throughout my experiences in both high school and college with both amazing and not so amazing teachers, I discovered what kind of teacher I wanted to be.”
Though new to Manchester, Ms. Babinsky is not new to the profession. She has taught at two different schools before MHS.
“This is my 5th year teaching. My first three were in Bedford County at Jefferson Forest High School and last year I was in Henrico County at Glen Allen High School,” she says. “ I have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and am currently teaching AFDA and AP Calculus.”
Time with family and friends helps keep her busy when she’s not working.
“I love spending time with my family and friends. My husband and I have a one year old daughter, a dog, and two cats. We love to spend time outside exploring trails and seeing new places. We love a good game night, too!”
Ms. Babinsky’s hobbies go beyond hiking and the occasional game night.
“I love baking (specifically cakes) and cake decorating,” she says. “ I also enjoy running.”
Ms. Babinsky says she also binges “pretty much all of the good sitcoms: The Office, Friends, Schitts Creek, New Girl, Parks and Rec.”
There’s one thing you won’t find her doing in her free time, though.
“I can’t whistle,” she says.
