Valentine’s Day has been celebrated on February 14th every year since the 14th and 15h centuries. It is celebrated all over the world; however, there are some countries that don’t celebrate it because of their government. Those countries include Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iran and Malaysia. Even though there are some government officials and cultural and religious reasons, people still find a way to celebrate it privately with their loved ones. Other countries that celebrate Valentine’s Day are Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and many parts of Europe, Asia, and Mexico.
The name “Valentine” comes from Saint Valentine, who is a Christian martyr. There are multiple legends about Saint Valentine, but the most popular one is that he was a priest in Rome during the 3rd century. According to this legend, he performed secret weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry because of the law from Emperor Claudius II. Claudious believed single men make better soldiers than those with wives and families.
Saint Valentine was eventually imprisoned and executed for his actions, and he soon became associated with love and romance. Over time, February 14th, the day of his death, became known as Valentine’s Day. The day has evolved into a celebration of love and affection, with people exchanging cards, gifts and expressions of love.
Some ways people celebrate Valentine’s day by exchanging cards and gifts. Some couples go out for romantic dinners and spend quality time together as well as giving flowers and sweet treats. For those who aren’t in a romantic relationship they spend the day with their friends. In the United States, it is estimated that around 55-60% of people celebrate Valentine’s Day, Not only is it for couples but for friends, family and even their pets. People celebrate it many different ways depending on their own traditions and customs associated with Valentine’s Day.
