President Donald Trump officially took office on Monday, January 20, 2025 as the 47th President of the United States. Since then, he has signed many executive orders. Here is what they are.
The first few executive orders Trump signed are relating to immigration. One of them was to declare a state of emergency at the US-Mexico border, deploying troops and National Guard at the border. He also promised mass deportations, where they will first target undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, and those who are staying in sanctuary areas, like Chicago. Trump also authorized ICE to target schools, churches, and courthouses, which were once prohibited areas. He also reinstated the ¨Remain in Mexico Policy”, which canceled appointments that were made through the CBP. Another executive order related to immigration he signed is attempting to get rid of birthright citizenship, which means if you were born in the USA with undocumented parents, you are still a citizen. However, this is a direct violation of the 14th amendment and is protected by the Constitution, and will most likely not happen. Attorney Cody Wofsy says ¨Denying citizenship to babies born on US soil is illegal, profoundly cruel, and contrary to our values as a country.¨
Katie Shipman, 12, says ¨I think it’s ridiculous, people grew up in this country and they are being forcefully removed. They do the work that no one else wants to do.
Trump declared a national energy emergency, where he repeatedly said ¨drill, baby, drill.¨ He signed another order, withdrawing the USA from the Paris Climate Treaty, which is the world’s second largest greenhouse gas emitter. Other things Trump has done since he got into office is withdrawing the USA from the World Health Organization, rescinding a 2022 Biden order that made prescription drugs cost less. He is also targeting transgender citizens, claiming that ¨ït is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female¨ on official documents. He also revoked the Equal Employment Opportunity order of 1965, which stops discrimination in the federal workplace. Along with this, he pardoned approx 1500 Jan 6 rioters, who stormed the capitol.
Gideon Bradner, 12, says ¨I think Trump thinks he knows what he’s doing when he doesn’t. Everything he’s done is going to have detrimental impacts to everyone and everything in America, and he needs some check to prevent him running the country into the ground like he did 7 different businesses.¨
