The Grinch is a character from Dr. Suess´s 1957 storybook “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” eventually turning into the 2000 live-action film, and the 2018 animated movie. While every version of the Grinch is executed a bit differently, the moody, Christmas-hating gist is still present in all of them. The Grinch didn’t always hate Christmas, however. His parents abandoned him, and growing up he always saw other kids get presents while he never got any, and he also was bullied in school. He started feeling rejected by the Who’s so he distanced himself from them and lived in a cave on top of a mountain.
The Grinch is described as green, furry, pot bellied, pear shaped, snub nosed humanoid creature with cat-liked and cynical personality.
The first use of the word “Grinch” was by Dr. Suess in his 1953 book “Scrambled Eggs Super!” The book is about a character named Peter T. Hooper, a boy who collects eggs from a number of exotic birds in order to make scrambled eggs. One of these exotic birds is called the “Beagle Beaked-Bald Headed Grinch” who shared the same cranky attitude as the Grinch.
The Grinch has been voiced and played by many different people throughout many films. In the Chuck Jones 1966 television special, the Grinch was voiced by Boris Karloff. Hans Conreid voiced the character in “Halloween is Grinch Night,” while Bob Holt voiced the character in “The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat,” a crossover with another Dr.Seuss character The Cat in the Hat. In the most popular Grinch movie, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000), the live action character is played by Jim Carey, a very famous Canadian American actor for his role in “The Mask” (1994).
The Grinch has become an anti icon of Christmas and the winter holidays, as a symbol of those who despise the holiday, in the same nature as the earlier character of Ebenezer Scrooge, another character who dislikes the holiday Christmas. Over the years, the Grinch has appeared on various forms of collectables such as Christmas ornaments, plush dolls and various clothing items. The Grinch has also made an appearance in the movie “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.”
