The new tardy system was made to accurately track tardies. Each tardy is ten minutes of seat time. Once students get nine tardies they have to make up for 90 minutes of seat time. One student, Levi Johnson, described it as “too wiggly.”
There is a split between people who support it and those who don’t. According to some students, mainly freshmen, the tardy system is too complicated. The line inside is always extremely long in the morning, so students are more late than they were before.
Some students feel that the tardy system is “unnecessary and has a negative effect on students.” According to Markiya Melton, “This system shows that the school is inconsiderate of students’ situations.” On the other hand, some students like the tardy system because it can excuse their tardies.
Harmony Mitchell said that they like the tardy system because seat time allows them more time in school so they could be motivated to get work done.
Ms. Kaylah Henderson, a teacher at Manchester, said “The tardy system is a way for students to take accountability for their actions.” She believes that the students who don’t like the tardy system are students who are always late. She says that this system is “preparing students for the real world,” such as being late for work. Overall this tardy system is a way to motivate students to get to school on time.
