The Shakespeare play, “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare was performed by our Lancers in the Lancer Theatre Company in the senior courtyard on October 22, 23, 24, 26, and 28.
The play, run by Mr. Matt Carly and Mr. Cary Nothnagel, did so well that they ended up selling out four shows and adding an extra show on the 28th of October due to its overwhelming success.
I asked Chloe Zimmerman, who played Francisco, what her experience was working with this cast in the play. “It was amazing! Everyone was so nice and encouraging throughout the entire process. Even when it was cold outside during the rehearsals or really hot, we didn’t give up! The only obstacles we had while rehearsing were a few line slip ups and the yellowjackets who stung a few of us.”
With the play being outside, it proved different difficulties for the Lancer cast and production team. The outdoor setting made it easier to portray the story, as they were able to use water since that is a major part of the story. However, they had to constantly refill and drain the water they were using. They also had less seating availability and had to set up backdrops and other things differently than they normally would have if the
play was inside.
Corina Morrison, a member of theater production, said “It was definitely stressful with the deadline we had to work with, but it was fun being able to build such an immersive set for students, teachers
and the community to come out and enjoy. Our biggest challenge was our technical aspect. We had to somehow hook up lights and sound outdoors, and when our original plan of putting it on the roof was shut down, we had to quickly brainstorm new ideas to make it work.”
The success of this show has put pressure on the Lancer Theater Company to keep up the great work, however they have proved that their determination and passion is what keeps them striving to be their best, so they believe their next performance could be even better.
