The 2024 presidential election is quickly approaching, happening November 5th. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming election.
As the race for president becomes more and more vital, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump compete for American votes. Between debates highlighting their policies and speeches given behind bulletproof glass, the American people have been curating close polls of who they believe should win the election, and who they will vote for. According to CNN’s recent poll, 48% of Americans show their support for Harris, while 47% are for Trump. This leaves very little wiggle room for the two candidates, making the way they portray their policies to America very important. “72% of Trump’s supporters say their choice is more for him than against Harris, while 60% of Harris’ supporters say their choice is more for her than against him,” reports CNN.
With one of the biggest elections in American history approaching, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have both released their platforms, which are policies they will put in place if they win the election. According to Trump’s official website, ¨President Trump’s 20 CORE PROMISES TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Donald Trump wants to seal the border, end inflation, carry out the largest deportation operation in American history, large tax cuts for workers, stop migrant crime, rebuild major cities and cut funding for any schools pushing critical race theory, racial gender ideology and any other racial, sexual and political content.
President Kamala Harris wants to restore and protect reproductive rights, stop gun violence by enforcing stricter gun control laws, secure the border, fix our broken immigration system and end the opioid crisis. These are not all of the candidates’ issues, but the more important and commonly known ones, which have a big effect on the turnout of the election.
Both presidential candidates have policies that will directly affect high school students. Curriculum, education funding, school lunches and career and technical education are all policies that impact us. Kamala Harris is against book bans, and she’s against policies that restrict the way schools are able to teach students about race and sexuality. On the other hand, Donald Trump opposes discussion of certain topics, believing they are too divisive for the classroom.
As for education funding, Harris wants to make funding more equitable for all schools. In Trump’s agenda 47, he wants to give more funding to schools that remove teacher tenure and enact merit pay. Additionally, in regards to school lunches, Harris wants to continue to expand access to free meals to areas that need it. During Trump’s presidency, he allowed schools to serve free meals to students during the pandemic, but it is unclear where he currently stands on the issue.
Both candidates are in agreement of supporting career and technical education; Harris and Trump both want to increase access to S.T.E.M. and CTE. These issues will all make a difference in our education and it matters to high school students even if they aren’t able to vote yet.
The first debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris happened Tuesday, September 10 in Philadelphia, PA. During this discussion, each candidate was given two minutes to respond to the given question or respond to the statement made by the other candidate. The other opponent’s microphone was muted during the duration of the other candidate speaking. This debate covered immigration, economic policy, abortion and foreign policy. This debate sparked a lot of controversy between US citizens, as some people thought the debate was not fair. Kamala Harris has agreed to debate Trump again, but Trump refused.
