What is academic validation, and why do teens feel the need to be validated by their academic worth? How does academic validation affect teens in their everyday lives?
Academic validation is when teens allow their scores on homework, exams, and tests determine their self worth. Teens feel the need to be validated by their academic worth because they feel pressure from themselves and outside sources, including parents and teachers. “Both my mom and I put pressure on me because she believes that it is very important.” says Kelsie Seay.
Academic Validation can also affect your grades. If you’re stressed, it can distract you and prevent you from getting work done, or the opposite can happen and the pressure forces you to study and can result in higher grades.
“I stress about everything and I do not get work done.” Rylin O’Neill said while speaking on how academic validation affects her grades.
In teens’ everyday lives they can feel affected by academic pressure. They can have affected grades, high anxiety, fear of failure and low self worth due to academic pressure.
“When I get a B, I study more and try to get a better grade,” Matthew Akery said when speaking on how getting a low grade affects him.
